Welcome to the class blog

Hello everyone. I'm Carolyn - your teacher for this semester. I'd like to welcome you all to the class and look forward to working with you. I'm going to start by telling you a bit about myself, then you can do the same by replying to this message.

Firstly, I've been an English teacher here in Portugal for over 20 years now. I'm married and my husband is Portuguese. Some of the things I like about the country are the sunshine and blue skies, and the emptiness of the countryside. I live in the country, across the river from Santarém and I love the open horizons and the wildlife. But I like Lisbon too, although I wouldn't like to live there again. Too much air pollution I also love a nice dish of grilled fish, salad, fresh bread and a nice glass of chilled wine. Perfect! I also love working in the garden (when it isn't too hot), reading, travelling, cooking and eating.

My first two degrees are in microbiology, but I totally changed area when I came to Portugal and like the fact that I feel at home in both the sciences and the arts (although I can't claim to being very artistic).
Well, that's a bit about me. It would be really nice if you replied to this message telling me a bit about you.

  1. Hi Carolyn! I am Marta Reis and I in the second year of the Translation Course. I live in Lisbon during the week but during the weekend I get to enjoy the countryside as well. I love reading, watching a good movie, cooking and cross-stitching. Looking forward to this semester!

  2. Hello Carolyn! My name is Rui Alexandre Santos but people usually call me Alex. I am nineteen years old and I am on my second year of University, studying Translation. I live in Carcavelos, a small town near Lisbon, which is quite close to the beach, something I get to enjoy during the summer. I quite like reading, watching movies, cycling, listening to music, surfing the internet and writing. I am horrible at describing myself, so I believe that is all. Looking forward to work with you this semester!

  4. Hello! This is nereid! I'm taking Translation as well and enjoying it very much. I've been living in Lisbon for almost a year and consider it to be one of the greatest cities of our times. I have a special interest in photography; I'm a cat lover; love traveling and camping; spend my time around music, books, juggling, and, most importantly, friends and family.

  5. Good afternoon Carolyn :) I'm Mara Carvalho and, like everyone here, I'm a second year Translation student. I chose this course because of my interest in languages, and translation is simply something I love to do (although it's frustrating sometimes). Studying at FCSH has been a rewarding experience, for I have learned so much in a very little time. Well, now some personal information: I'm 18 years old and I live in Setúbal, a beautiful town known for it's beaches and it's delicious fish. I am a real "setubalense", because of my weird accent, which everyone I know makes fun of. I like to read (although I haven't been doing it much lately), to spend the whole Summer at the beach and, of course, to spend time with my friends and family. I absolutely love dogs, they're probably the most awesome animals out there, but I never had one. I live in the city now, but until I was 13 I lived in the country. Personally, I prefer the city because I'm closer to everything, including my friends. I'm a TV show and movie junkie and I love playing games online. I also love sports and if I could I'd be a tennis player. And this is enough for now, I guess...oh, and I'm also looking forward to have you as my English teacher this semester.

  6. Hi Carolyn, I'm Annalisa. I'm an erasmus student landed here in Lisbon only a month ago. I come from Perugia, a city in center Italy. "At home" I'm taking my MA degree in modern languages and literatures. Since I'm majoring in Portugues, I came here to improve the language and doing researches for my final dissertation. Here everything is strange for me - it's been four years since last time I was in an English class; I keep going to classes here, although I wouldn't have to in Italy; doing "homeworks, assignments, I'm not used to that at all! And the worst thing, I never can speak my own language, I really miss my mother tongue and there's so much confusion in my mind!
Beside that, I love best music and books, writing and taking pictures among the other things.
    See you in class!

  7. Hey Carolyn!

About the technological advances, I just wanted to say that in my community, it being my family, my friends, my colleagues and the people around me, the technology has had a positive effect on the lives everyone. Obviously, internet is one of the technological advances that has had the most impact in our lives. Internet allows people to get connected with each other, whether they are in Asia or in Europe. One can argue that this aspect makes people get lazy, anti-social and gets them into a vegetative state. I could go on forever about all the positive and the negative aspects of the technological advances , but in general I believe technology is one of the biggest "discoveries" of the 21st century!

    See you tomorrow,
    Marta
