Have technological advances had a positive effect on the lives of people in your country?

The advance of technology has greatly changed our society, completely revolutionizing the way we do almost every single thing we do. For example, hundredths of years ago, it was simply impossible to communicate with someone on a different country without having to wait at least a month. However, currently you can chat directly with someone on the other side of the world using the internet, with programs such as Skype and Windows Live Messenger. It has also done wonders in other fields, like medicine and industry, improving our quality of life and allowing a better organization and propagation of information. However, this has also made us rely much more on technology, and if we don't take care we might end up completely dependant on it.

  1. This is almost a "rhetorical" question, in my opinion, because it's obvious that technological advances had a positive effect in Portugal. Today we don't realize it and we think we're still behind most of the european countries, but when we come to think of it, in comparison with the rest of the world, we're actually a pretty technological country. First and foremost: there are more cellphones than people in Portugal; most of the people I know has more than one cell, which is probably the most important item nowadays. And then, computers (along with the Internet). Work, leisure, shopping, chatting... basically our entire lives revolve around the computer. Our life span is constantly increasing due, in a way, to advances in technology. We have drinking water, electricity, gas, all sorts of transportation and much more, which have developped in a speeding way and are ready for us to use. We take all these things for granted now. Overall, technology has had a positive impact and more is still to come. And as Alex said, one of the downsides is that we rely more and more on technology, which is not exactly positive: If the Internet shut down or if there was no electricity, what would we do?
